About Us

"To be an industry leader whose constancy of purpose is the continuous improvement of ourselves, our product and our service."

- from Keywell Mission Statement.

Samuel G. and Barney L. Keywell established Keywell in 1924 as a scrap metal recycling business. The Company began operations with one facility in Detroit Michigan, supplying carbon steel scrap to nearby mills. With the boom of the stainless steel industry in the United States following World War II, the Company entered the stainless steel scrap recycling business thereby transforming itself into a more specialized metals recycling Company.

In 1979, the Keywell family sold the Company to Key International Manufacturing, Inc. The Company grew steadily through acquisitions and aggressive marketing. In 1986, Keywell was spun-out into a separate entity and taken private by an investor group led by the Company's current Board of Directors.

In 1987, Keywell purchased the business of Vac Air Alloys Corporation, the largest supplier of high temperature alloys in the world and a leading stainless steel scrap processor. The purchase included two domestic processing facilities located in Frewsburg, New York and West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. In 1993, Keywell purchased the business of Rainbow Metals, Inc., a major processor of high temperature alloys. The company subsequently grew by opening new processing facilities in Atlanta, Georgia; Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania and Huntington Park, California. Today, more than ten employees along with the members of the Board of Directors comprise the ownership of the Company.

We can truly say that Keywell is an established enterprise with fourteen domestic locations and over 340 dedicated employees working to build on our leadership position in the stainless steel and high temperature alloy recycling industry.
